Ellen Moons ledde Nobelkommittén för fysik
2024
i
information.
Hon
introducerade också pristagarnas
nobelföreläsningar i fysik och presenterade
pristagarnas viktiga arbete vid Nobelprisceremonin i Konserthuset i Stockholm
den 10 december. | Ellen Moons, ordförande för Nobelkommittén för fysik. Foto: Patrik Lundin.

| Ellen Moons Led the Nobel Committee for Physics 2024This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two scientists whose groundbreaking work has shaped modern machine learning: - John Hopfield developed an associative memory, using artificial neural networks, enabling machines to store and retrieve patterns.
- Geoffrey Hinton pioneered methods in deep learning, allowing machines to autonomously recognize patterns and perform tasks like image identification with high accuracy.
Ellen Moons, Professor of Physics at Karlstad University and a partner in our SOLVE project, has played a key role in the selection of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics. As Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, she participated in the announcement of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics on October 8th. She also introduced the laureates’ Nobel Lectures in Physics and presented the laureates' important work at the Nobel Award Ceremony in the Concert Hall in Stockholm on December 10th.

| - It was a great honour and privilege to present the laureates, Ellen says, and also a pleasure to meet them in person and listen to their Nobel lectures, where they tell us about the developments that led to the prize. Congratulations to Ellen Moons from the SOLVE project for her important role in this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics.

| Uppsala University’s World Record in CIGS Solar Cells Highlighted at IVA's Annual General MeetingAt IVA’s (Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences) Annual General Meeting 2024, the new world record efficiency of
23.64%
in silver alloying CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) solar cells was highlighted. This result was achieved through the collaboration between Uppsala University and First Solar European Technology Center AB (formerly Evolar). Here you can read the research article for more details. | IVA, which brings together the expertise and experience of around 1,300 academic members and 250 companies, plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration across academia, business, and politics. During this year’s Annual General Meeting, IVA celebrated engineering excellence by welcoming new members, awarding IVA’s prestigious gold medals, and presenting the Technology Speech of the Year. Among the highlights of the event was the recognition of Uppsala University’s record-breaking achievement in solar technology. This world record of 23.64% efficiency in CIGS solar cells underscores the continued potential of CIGS-based solar cells as a key technology in the renewable energy landscape.
